Cardiopulmonary Rehab

Cardiac Rehab

Cardiac rehab offers heart patients and their families a way to return to an active and satisfying life as quickly and safely as possible. It is a three-phase program.

Phase 1: Inpatient

Phase 1 begins while the patient is still hospitalized. This phase includes an individual program with basic information on exercise, heart disease, nutrition and risk factors that cause heart disease.

Phase 2: Monitored outpatient

Phase 2 is a continuation of the information and monitored exercise that begins in phase 1. Educational topics covered include:

  • Signs and symptoms of heart problems
  • Heart basics
  • Medications
  • Coping with stress
  • Exercising for good health
  • Nutrition therapy

The exercise and education components of the cardiac rehab program are designed to meet each individual's needs. Staff will work with each patient to gradually build physical stamina, lower the risk of future heart problems, and allow the cardiac patient to return to an active lifestyle.

Phase 2 usually begins one to two weeks after the patient leaves the hospital and is held three times weekly for 8 to 12 weeks.

Phase 3: Maintenance

Phase 3 provides the opportunity to maintain an individual exercise program and continue education for a nominal monthly fee. The cardiac rehab staff help patients manage their regular exercise program.

Pulmonary Rehab

Pulmonary rehab is an individualized exercise, breathing retraining and educational process designed to help people with the following respiratory problems:

  • Asthma and asthmatic bronchitis
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
  • Other respiratory diseases

Phase 1: Inpatient

Hospitalized patients begin an individual program of basic information on lung disease and breathing techniques used to reduce symptoms.

Phase 2: Monitored outpatient

Phase 2 is a continuation of education, breathing retraining and monitored exercise to meet individual needs. Heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation are carefully monitored throughout each session. Education topics include:

  • Healthy eating.
  • When to call the physician.
  • How to take medications.
  • Coping with stress.
  • How to simplify work tasks.
  • Developing a personalized, safe home exercise plan.

Phase 3: Maintenance

Phase 3 provides the opportunity to maintain an individual exercise program and continue education. Pulmonary rehab staff help patients manage their regular exercise program for a nominal monthly fee.
