Choosing a home healthcare agency
It's important to find caregivers you're comfortable with and an organization that suits your needs. First, consult your healthcare provider, hospital discharge planner or other professionals involved with your healthcare. They know your needs and work regularly with home healthcare agencies.
Make a list of agencies in your area that could meet the needs of your home healthcare plan. Then, find out about each agency on your list.
Gathering information
Talk with home healthcare agencies you're considering. Ask the agency:
- Are they certified by Medicare?
- What services are available?
- Does the agency have a written statement of fees, policies, etc.?
- What arrangements are made for emergencies?
- What role does the family play in the treatment plan?
- Who supervises the home healthcare plan?
- Does the supervisor make regular visits to the home?
- Will the agency be in regular contact with my physician?
Ask the agency to give you names of healthcare providers and clients you can contact.
Ask healthcare professionals:
- Do you regularly refer clients to the agency or have a contract with the agency?
- Do you have information about care under treatment plans similar to mine?
- Do you know of complaints and positive comments about the agency?
Ask clients:
- Were the agency and staff members honest and helpful?
- Were there any problems with Medicare billing or insurance claims?
- Were you pleased with the quality of care provided?
