The RiverView Foundation is pleased to support area students in their desire to further their education in healthcare and create opportunities for career advancement.

Bishop Afonya Healthcare Scholarship

Bishop AfonyaIn honor and memory of his father, Bishop Afonya, Dr. Idatonye Afonya has established the Bishop Afonya Healthcare Scholarship through the RiverView Foundation. Dr. Idatonye Afonya is a board-certified general surgeon and has been a valued member of the medical staff at RiverView since 1994.

Funding guidelines

  • The scholarship is restricted to residents of RiverView Health’s service area that includes Crookston and other Minnesota communities within a 30-mile radius of the RiverView Health Hospital.
  • This scholarship will be available annually as long as sufficient funding is available.
  • Applicant must be enrolled, or give intention to enroll, in a post-secondary or higher education healthcare field of study at a certified post-secondary or higher institution.
  • In order to qualify for a continuation of this scholarship, a recipient must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Documentation of GPA standard is required and must be provided by the applicant.
  • A stipend of $1,000 will be awarded to each year’s scholarship recipient. The check will be mailed directly to the institution of the recipient’s choice. The recipient will receive the stipend through the financial aids office of that institution. It is to be applied to the cost of tuition or related educational expenses.
  • The recipient may reapply annually.

  • To submit an application, please complete all information requested on the form.
  • The applicant must meet eligibility requirements.
  • Submit one application form, a copy of your current grades transcript, a resume and (2) short (one-page) letters of recommendation by noon on April 15, 2020. You will be contacted if more information is needed.

Awarding of the scholarship

  • RiverView Foundation Board of Directors will review and evaluate scholarship applications.
  • Applications will be judged on the demonstrated personal commitment of the applicant to his/her specified healthcare field of study, and on how the granting of the scholarship will contribute to healthcare.
  • The scholarship award check will be issued prior to the starting date of the applicant’s next school term. (Issue date to be arranged between Foundation Office and recipient.)

Lenertz Family Healthcare Scholarship

In recognition of the time and efforts Thomas C. Lenertz provided to the establishment and advancement of the RiverView Foundation, its Board of Directors established the Lenertz Family Healthcare Scholarship. As one of RiverView Foundation's original founders in 1990, Mr. Lenertz was instrumental in all development stages of the RiverView Foundation. As Riverview Healthcare Association CEO, he continued to serve the Foundation as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors until his December 2000 retirement.

Funding guidelines

  • The scholarship is restricted to residents of RiverView Health’s service area that includes Crookston and other Minnesota communities within a 30-mile radius of the RiverView Health Hospital.
  • This scholarship will be available annually as long as sufficient funding is available.
  • Applicant must be enrolled, or give intention to enroll, in a post-secondary healthcare field of study at a certified post-secondary institution.
  • Priority will be given to applicants pursuing a degree in healthcare management and/or intent to serve the RiverView Health primary service area upon completion of education.
  • A stipend of $1,000 will be awarded to each year’s scholarship recipient. Two recipients will be awarded each year. The check will be mailed directly to the institution of the recipient’s choice. The recipient will receive the stipend through the financial aids office of that institution. It is to be applied to the cost of tuition or related educational expenses.
  • The recipient may re-apply annually.

June E. Shaver Healthcare Scholarship

June E. ShaverRiverView Foundation is honored to provide this regional healthcare scholarship program established in memory, honor, and respect of June E. Shaver's life values and commitment to serving others. In her professional career, June was a woman of high integrity, impeccable work ethic, and dedication. She was a strong and passionate leader, actively engaged in community service. She was a well-rounded woman of many interests. She valued self-motivation, high achievement and the betterment of self.

Funding guidelines

  • The scholarship is restricted to the following regional rural communities of Minnesota: Crookston, Climax, Fertile, Mentor, Erskine, Red Lake Falls, Warren, Argyle, Stephen, Fisher, East Grand Forks.
  • This scholarship will be available annually as long as sufficient funding is available.
  • Applicant must be a high school graduate who has completed a minimum of one semester in an accredited post-secondary higher education institution, is enrolled for at least a second semester AND is pursuing a degree in a healthcare field.
  • A stipend of up to $1,000 will be awarded to each year's scholarship recipient. The check will be mailed directly to the institution of the recipient's choice. The recipient will receive the stipend through the financial aid office of that institution. It is to be applied to the cost of tuition or related educational expenses.
  • The recipient may reapply annually.
  • Financial need may be considered in awarding the scholarship, but is not an eligibility requirement.

  • The scholarship award check will be issued prior to the starting date of the applicant’s next school term. (Issue date to be arranged between Foundation Office and recipient.)

Richard Maves Healthcare Scholarship

Richard MavesThis scholarship is in memory of Richard "Dick'' Maves, a kind-hearted individual known for his generosity, impeccable work ethic, exceptional customer service as a local pharmacist for 30-plus years, and the legacy he left of being a community builder and successful business owner.

Funding guidelines

  • The scholarship is restricted to applicants who are RiverView employees or residents of RiverView Health's service area that includes Crookston and other Minnesota communities within a 30-mile radius of the RiverView Health Hospital, which Richard served as a dedicated board of director.
  • This scholarship will be available annually as long as sufficient funding is available.
  • The applicant must be a high school graduate who is enrolled AND is pursuing a degree in a healthcare field.
  • A stipend of up to $1,000 will be awarded to each scholarship recipient. The check will be mailed directly to the institution of the recipient's choice. The recipient will receive the stipend through the financial aid office of that institution. It is to be applied to the cost of tuition or related educational expenses.
  • The recipient may reapply annually.
