Dr. Fennell is a native of Edmonton, Alberta. He received his undergraduate degree and attended medical school at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He completed his internship at Misericordia Hospital and his orthopedic residency at the University of Calgary, where he was honored with awards for outstanding intern, and family practice resident with the best clinical and therapeutic skills. Dr. Fennell completed a fellowship in upper extremity orthopaedic surgery at Calgary General Hospital and Foothills General Hospital in Calgary. He also completed a clinical fellowship at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center in Downey, California in rehabilitation orthopaedics and sports medicine.

Dr. Fennell is a fellow in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is also a member of the Canadian Medical Association, the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the North Dakota Medical Association.
