Stroke Support Group

RiverView Health is starting a new multi-disciplined Stroke Support Group for those who have suffered stroke and their family members. The sessions will be facilitated by Kelsey Curry, RN/health coach, and will consist of the latest information in stroke recovery and services available.

The new group will meet for a series of four sessions held throughout the month of June from 1 to 3 PM. The first hour of each session will consist of education related to stroke, with the second hour reserved for social time and a light snack. The sessions are as follows:

June 6th: Session One
  • Blood pressure, cholesterol and vitals check
  • Cardiac Rehab, Rehab Services
  • Medication information, Pharmacy
June 13: Session Two
  • Nutritional support, Dietetic Services
  • Health and safety services in your home, Home Care
  • Sleep Lab, Rehab Services
June 20th: Session Three
  • Adaptive equipment and energy conservation, Occupational Therapy
  • Adaptive equipment and exercise, Physical Therapy
  • Language and communication devices, Speech-Language Pathology
June 27th: Session Four
  • Wellness and health services, Adult Day Services
  • Acupuncture and post stroke support, RiverView

All meetings will be held in Meeting Room 1 of RiverView Health, 323 South Minnesota Street, Crookston. For easiest access, please park in the North parking lot and go through the entrance near the North Clinic. Meeting Room 1 is located across from the elevators on the main level. Effective Communication Strategies for Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease, community education The RiverView Care Center will host “Effective Communication Strategies’’, Tuesday, June 28th, in Meeting Room 4, from 6 to 7:30 PM.

This session is designed to provide practical information and resources to help dementia caregivers learn to decode verbal and behavioral messages from people with dementia. The goals of the program are for participants to better understand the changes in communication that occur with the disease progression and how they manifest in the person with dementia, and to be able to identify ways to connect at each stage of the disease.
