Prevent Type 2 Diabetes classes start in Crookston, Fertile, Red Lake Falls

327.8. What does that number represent? That’s proof that RiverView’s Prevent Type 2 Diabetes Program is working. That’s how much weight has been lost in 2017 by 32 people participating in Prevent Type 2 Diabetes classes offered by RiverView Dietitian Darcey Larsen, RD LD, and RiverView Health Coach Kelsey Billing, RN, BSN.

If you’d like to get in on the benefits of the program, you’re in luck; Larsen and Billing will start new classes in the communities of Crookston, Fertile and Red Lake Falls Tuesday, Jan. 23rd. Even better? The year-long, lifestyle change program is completely free!

The classes are open to the public and offered to anyone who feels he/she is at risk of developing diabetes or have been diagnosed with prediabetes – a condition that occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

The three separate groups will meet weekly through June and then will meet twice a month July through December. Classes will be held on Tuesdays in the following locations:
  • Red Lake Falls:  9 am-10 am, Sunset Court Community Room in the Housing Authority’s main complex at 209 International Drive
  • Crookston: Noon to 1 pm, Meeting Room 1, RiverView Health, 323 South Minnesota Street
  • Fertile: 3 pm-4 pm, Community Center, 101 South Mill Street

Each session will include discussion and education on a variety of topics including nutrition and activity to help prevent Type 2 diabetes, and participants will go home with helpful handouts, tips and activities.

Registration for the free program is required by Friday, Jan. 19th. To register or if you have questions regarding qualification, please call Larsen at 218-281-9589 or Billing at 218-281-9259.
