Pain management is very important when dealing with the musculoskeletal system. Pain management providers specialize in caring for patients who are dealing with chronic pain, whether resulting from injury, disease, or otherwise. Chronic pain is defined as any pain that lasts for more than three months. Acute pain may be considered a symptom of a disease or injury, while chronic pain is a specific healthcare problem, a disease in its own right.

According to the Institute of Medicine, chronic pain affects more than 100 million American adults. Chronic pain is often the culprit of lost sleep, poor nutrition, decreased activity and lack of joy in activities and time spent with family and friends.

Common causes of chronic pain include:
     • Arthritis
     • Back and neck injury
     • Fibromyalgia and musculoskeletal pain
     • Migraine headaches
     • Phantom limb pain (experienced by those who have had a limb amputated)
     • Shingles

Dr. Sivanna creates customized pain management plans for patients that may include therapy, medication management, minimally invasive procedures, and recommended lifestyle changes. When creating a customized pain management plan, Dr. Sivanna evaluates the patient and his/her medical history, in addition to performing tests to arrive at a precise diagnosis.
